The preferences dialog is where you can set the global program options that control how a new puzzle is created. Changing these options does not change puzzles in already open windows unless the Apply button is clicked, in which case the changes will apply to the topmost puzzle window. If the OK button is clicked the preferences will be applied to the next new puzzle created.
The preferences dialog contains four tabs each of which contains several options.
The first tab is the Chars tab. The highlighted characters in the grid are
the only ones that will be accepted in input words by the program. Clicking on the
grid will toggle the slection of character on or off (some characters in the top
rows are not selectable since they do not represent displayable characters.)
If the 'Use for fill' checkbox is selected any new puzzle will default to using the
selected chracters for filling the spaces between words.
The Puzzle tab controls other aspects of the default settings for a puzzle. The pop-up list selects the default font for the puzzle. The radio buttons in the 'Case' group select whether the puzzle is in UPPER CASE, lower case, or MiXeD cAsE. The height and width spinners control how many letters high and wide the puzzle will be. The Font spinners control the size and spacing of the characters in the puzzle grid. The checkboxes in the 'Lengths' group filter the word lengths that appear in the list and are accepted as entries. The 'directions' checkboxes control the directions in which the words in the puzzle will be permitted to run. The central button toggles the others. The 'Check for duplicates' and 'Show solution' checkboxes control whether the puzzle will, by default, check for duplicate words in the puzzle, and show the solution of the puzzle in the display.
The Print tab controls the settings for the font and size of the header printed at the top of the page and the list of words in the puzzle, and whether these are printed. The 'Extra Lines Below List' spinner allows extra lines of blank space to be printed between the word list and the puzzle.
The File tab controls the setting for how plain and styled text are saved. It allows the user to set the type and creator codes of the files that are saved.
