The Bullets and Numbers palette contains controls for applying bullets, outline numbers, and paragraph numbers.
Bullets and numbers can be selected and formatted, just like any character. For example, you can select a bullet and choose its font and font size from the Font palette.
To apply formatting to a bullet or number:
- 1. Select the bullet or number.
- 2. Format the bullet or number using the palettes in the Character View.
Numbers may contain multiple characters; for example, IV.A.3.ii. Pagehand treats the entire number string as a single character; you cannot select the component characters separately and apply different formatting to each.
A paragraph may have a bullet attribute that draws a single bullet character at the beginning of the paragraph. You can:
- choose the bullet character
- specify the bullet’s indent, measured from the paragraph’s first line indent
- specify the indent of the character following the bullet, measured from the paragraph’s first line indent
Bullets always have a left alignment; that is, the left edge of the bullet is aligned with the indent.
A paragraph may have a paragraph number attribute that draws a set of characters including a sequential number at the beginning of the paragraph. You can:
- specify characters that appear before and after the number
- choose a number format, for example arabic or roman
- specify the number’s indent, measured from the paragraph’s first line indent
- specify the indent of the character following the number, measured from the paragraph’s first line indent
- specify how the number is aligned relative to its indent
- specify the value of the paragraph number
A paragraph may have an outline number attribute that draws a set of characters including a sequential number at the beginning of the paragraph. Outline numbers differ from paragraph numbers by allowing you to nest numbering sequences in a hierarchy, as you do with an outline. You can:
- specify characters that appear before and after the number
- choose a number format, for example arabic or roman
- specify the number’s indent, measured from the paragraph’s first line indent
- specify the indent of the character following the number, measured from the paragraph’s first line indent
- specify how the number is aligned relative to its indent
- specify the value of the outline number
- specify the nesting level of the number
- display the numbers for all levels in the hierarchy
To remove or apply a bullet, paragraph number, or outline number:
- From the popup menu labeled Type choose None, Bullet, Paragraph Number, or Outline Number.
The Bullets and Numbers palette collapses to save space when the current paragraph has no bullet or number. It expands as needed to show all the formatting options. Options that do not apply to bullets and paragraph numbers are disabled.

To specify the bullet character:
- Choose a character from the popup menu containing bullet characters
- —OR—
- Select a character in the popup menu and type the character you want to use
To adjust the horizontal position of a bullet or number:
- Enter a value in the text field labeled Indent.
- —OR—
- Use the up and down arrows to the right of the text field to increase or decrease the value.
The indent is measured from the first line indent for the paragraph.
To adjust the horizontal position of text following a bullet or number:
- Enter a value in the text field labeled Text Indent.
- —OR—
- Use the up and down arrows to the right of the text field to increase or decrease the value.
The text indent is measured from the first line indent for the paragraph.
To change the alignment of a number:
- From the popup menu labeled Align choose Left, Right, or Center.
Alignment determines whether the left edge, right edge, or center of the number is aligned with the indent. If you choose right or center alignment and the indent is not large enough to contain the number, Pagehand will draw the number as if it were left aligned.
To display text characters before or after a number:
- Type the desired values in the text fields to the left and right of the number format popup menu.
By default, the text field for characters following the number contains a period. If you do not want a period following the number, delete the period in this text field.
To choose a number format:
- From the popup menu containing formatted numbers, choose one of the seven options provided.
The number formats are:
- 1: the number will appear as a simple arabic numeral.
- 01: the number will appear as a simple arabic numeral that contains at least two digits.
- 001: the number will appear as a simple arabic numeral that contains at least three digits.
- A: the number will appear as an uppercase letter of the alphabet. Multiple letters are added as needed; for example, the number 27 is AA.
- a: the number will appear as a lowercase letter of the alphabet. Multiple letters are added as needed; for example, the number 27 is aa.
- IV: the number appears as an uppercase roman numeral.
- iv: the number appears as a lowercase roman numeral.
To assign a specific number to a paragraph:
- 1. Check the box labeled Restart With.
- 2. Enter a value in the text field to the right of the check box.
- —OR—
- 2. Use the up and down arrows to the right of the text field to increase or decrease the value.
To specify the level of an outline number:
- Enter a value in the text field labeled Level.
- —OR—
- Use the up and down arrows to the right of the text field to increase or decrease the value.
You may assign a level number between 1 and 9.
You can display an outline number as the number for its level only, or you can display a string of all the outline numbers from higher levels. For example, consider a paragraph at level 3 that has the number 6. The nearest preceding level 2 number is 5, and the nearest preceding level 1 number is 4. You can display the outline number as 6. or as 4.5.6.
To display all the levels of an outline number:
- Check the box labeled Display All Levels.
