How can I...
Add a new word? |
|
![]() |
It's easy. Select the category you want to add the word to (in the leftside categories list), and click the "Add your word" toolbar icon, or click the "New Word" item in the "File" menu, or just press the keyboard shortcut ⌘A. First, you can enter the word in "their" language, and then, hit Tab, for instance, to enter the meaning of that word in "your" language. You can also add tags and comments. Once created, you can assign a word to a category, just dragging to the "categories" tree. |
Add, delete and modify new categories? |

Keep Your Word provides you three default categories. But you do not need to stick to them. To modify the name of any category, first select it. Then, double click its name, or select the "Edit Group or Smart Group" in the File menu, or press the keyboard shortcut ⌘I. To add a new category, first select the category you want to be its "father". If you want the new category you are going to create to be located at the top level of the tree, select "Classification". Then, click the "+" button in the lower left corner of the app interface, or select the "New Group" item in the File menu, or press the shortcut ⇧⌘N. To remove a category, just select it, and click the "-" button in the lower left corner of the app, or click the "Remove Group or Smart Group" item from the File menu. Don't worry, the words assigned to that category will not be deleted. Oh, and you can always change the hierarchy dragging and dropping the categories. |
Create and use Smart Groups? |
|

If you do not feel comfortable using a hierarchical organization, just group your word using Smart Groups. Smart Groups are quite similar to iTunes' smart lists. You decide what you want to have in a Smart Group (words containing one character, containing one tag, created in a date range...) and Keep Your Word groups them for you. To create a Smart Group, press the ⌥ key and you will see how the "+" button in the lower left corner of the interface changes into a wheel. Click it, and a sheet will open. In that sheet, you can select the criteria that Keep Your Word will use to populate your Smart Group. Tags, the meaning of the words in both languages, and the date that the word was inserted can be declared. |
Find words? |
|

You have used Keep Your Word to build your own dictionary. But, how can you recover each word when you need it?. Well, you have many possibilities. First, you can browse your Categories or your Smart Groups, but sometimes it is quicker to have a quick find method. Press the keyboard shortcut ⌥⌘F, to focus on the Find field, and start writing what comes to your mind. Keep Your Word will check what you write against its data, including tags, comments, and the meaning of the words in both your and their language, and will show you the results. But remember, the search is context sensitive, so it will only return the results included in the Category or Smart List that is selected. If you want to search all your words, just select, well, "All your words". |
Do exercises? |
|
![]() |
You can do three different kinds of vocabulary exercises. And the three of them are context sensitive, so remember to first select the Category or Smart Category that contains the word you want to exercise. Then, in the lower right side of the Keep Your Word interface, select the kind of exercise to do clicking on any of the buttons. "Flash Cards" is a quick exercise, where you are shown a word in the "other" language, and you have to recognize it. "Quick Quiz" is, well, a quiz. You are shown a word, and two possible meanings, and have to identify the correct one. Finally, in the "Printed Test" mode, you can print a random list of words, in the "other" language, in "your" language, or in both, so you can do written tests. The number of Flash Cards and the number of questions in the Quick Quiz can be changed in the application Preferences (⌘,) |
