x64 Info

The Microsoft .Net Framework comes in (x86) and (x64) versions , just as Windows does.

•  The overwhelming majority of Windows XP computers are (x86).

( Some specialty versions of XP are (x64), 64 bit.  If your version of XP is (x64)
then you mostly likely are aware of that.  If you are not aware that your
version of XP is (x64) then it is most likely (x86), 32bit )

•  Windows versions prior to XP are (x86)

4.0 Info

The 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 Frameworks are the most widely used.

The 3.0 and 3.5 frameworks are built on top of or around the 2.0 framework,
and as such are backwardly compatible. (3.5 will run 3.0 apps and 2.0 apps,
  3.0 will run 2.0 apps)

Windows XP did not come with the .NET framework pre-installed.

Window Vista came with 3.0  pre-installed.

Window 7 came with 3.5  pre-installed.

4.0 was released in April 2010, and can be installed on XP SP3 and upward. 4.0 is
not backwardly compatible and will only run 4.0 apps. It is no doubt slated
to be pre-installed on Windows 8.

Installing multiple versions of the framework on your computer is
supported by Windows.
Microsoft designed the frameworks with this in mind
and they work very well together. There is no need to un-install previous versions
when installing a newer version.  ( Microsoft )
